The town also boasts the departure point of the steam train journey over the Heartbeat moorlands to Goathland (aka Aidensfield) as well as an ancient castle, modern swimming pool and the Flamingo Land theme park. All the myriad delights of North Yorkshire are easily accessible: Eden Camp is close by, Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall (N.T.) and Rievaulx Abbey are under 15 miles and Thirsk, home of the James Herriot museum, is 20 miles, whilst Ripon and Fountains Abbey (N.T.) are 35 miles. The magnificent Minster, museums, medieval streets, theatres, and cinema of the city of York; Scarborough's golden sands and traditional seaside amusements; Whitby for a bustling fishing harbour and the chance to see tall ships; and Robin Hood's Bay, with all its smugglers' secrets, all lie within half an hour's drive.
