Keen anglers should bring their rods for the fishing on site. Nearby Linlithgow has many attractive buildings as well as shops, pubs and tea rooms (3 miles), but is best known for its Royal Palace; overlooking the town's loch, and probably Scotland's finest such building, it was begun in the 15th century and is famous as the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. Other historic places of interest include the ruins of Blackness Castle (7 miles) from where a nature trail runs along the seaward edge of woodlands to one of the loveliest 18th century houses in Scotland, Hopetoun House, its museum and park; in the same small area visitors will discover the little 17th century fairytale castle, The Binns (NTS). Beecraigs Country Park is 5 miles. Sports centre, swimming pool, riding 3 miles. Golf 1½ miles.

Perhaps the major attraction of our holiday cottages in Midlothian is their proximity to Edinburgh, one of the world’s greatest and most beautiful cities, home to the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile and much else besides. You’ll need to set aside more than just a day to do justice to the many attractions of Scotland’s capital. But there is much more to discover in Midlothian itself. The Pentland Hills Regional Park is a network of footpaths and great for walkers. It’s a justly popular day out for the residents of Edinburgh. And families will love the facilities at Vogrie Country Park, another excellent destination for a day trip. Something not to be missed on one of our Midlothian cottage holidays is a visit to the famous Rosslyn Chapel, which featured as a location in the Da Vinci Code. The chapel, with its mysterious crypt and associations with the Knights Templar, has been the source of many myths and legends over the years. Rosslyn was also the site of one of William Wallace’s victories against the English. Borthwick Castle, one of the most impressive medieval Scottish castles, is also well worth a visit.
